How to Design Mobile Billboard Creative That Gets Noticed: Tips, Specs & Templates

By Demic Editorial Team

Designing for a mobile LED billboard is fundamentally different from creating a Facebook ad or a print brochure. Your canvas is massive, brightly illuminated, and moving at 20 miles per hour. If your design isn't instantly readable, your campaign budget is wasted.

The 3-Second Rule

In Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising, the golden rule is the "3-Second Rule." A pedestrian or driver has a maximum of three seconds to look at your truck, absorb the message, and know what action to take. Keep your copy under seven words total. If it requires a paragraph to explain, it belongs on your website, not the side of a truck.

Technical Specs & Resolution

For Demic Video Trucks, the optimal resolution is strictly 1920x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio) for the side panels. To ensure your design meets our quality standards and won't appear distorted or pixelated, run it through our OOH Ad Spec Validator before submitting.

Typography & Readability

Font size is non-negotiable. To be readable from a distance of 50 feet across an intersection, your primary text must be a minimum of 72pt, ideally much larger. Avoid script, thin, or heavily stylized fonts. Stick to bold, sans-serif typefaces with high contrast ratios against the background. Black text on a yellow background or white text on a dark blue background offers excellent daylight visibility.

Animation vs. Static Debate

Because LED screens allow for video, many brands want complex, TV-style commercials. However, on a moving truck, fast cuts and elaborate storytelling fail. The best approach is "cinemagraph" style subtle motion—a static central message with an animated background, or a slow reveal of the Call-To-Action (CTA).

Layout Best Practices: QR Codes and CTAs

Place your Call-To-Action in the lower third of the screen where it is closest to eye level for pedestrians. If using a QR code, make it massive—at least 20% of the screen height—and place it near the center or bottom right. Ensure there's enough clear space around the code so smartphone cameras can grab it quickly.
